Media Release - Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources Dubbo: 6 September 2005 WESTERN LANDS LEASE ASSISTANCE OFFERED
The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is urging residents of Lightning Ridge to apply for Western Lands leases on residential mining claims as soon as possible
Geoff Wise, Western Lands Commissioner and DNR Far West Regional Director, said it was important for residents on the permissive occupancy to understand the recent offer to convert their residential mineral claim to a Western Lands lease.
"We are working to provide Lightning Ridge residents a 'bankable' title on their land," Mr Wise said.
"Residential mineral claims are an interim arrangement that last either one or five years, and won't be renewed after January 2009.
"After this time, residents will need a Western Lands lease or they will again have no title. It is important also to note that there will be a cut-off date set in 2008 for applying for Western Lands leases to allow for processing time.”
Mr Wise said that there were other advantages in converting to a Western Lands lease.
"For those who have taken out a five year lease, the Department of Primary Industries, Mineral Resources has offered to refund residential mineral claim for the unused years, backdated to include a full refund for the current year," Mr Wise said.
"Also, Western Lands leases are for 20 years and cost less than a residential mineral claim.
"We want to ensure that Lighting Ridge residents get the most secure and best deal possible.
DNR staff are available to help residents complete and lodge applications for Western Lands Leases, and to answer questions and explain the process. Richelle Buckland 02 9228 6394
