Media Release - Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources Newcastle: 15 August 2005 INCREASED WATER ALLOCATION FOR HUNTER RIVER AND GLENNIES CREEK
Regional Director for the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources (DIPNR), Craig Abbs, today announced an increase in the Available Water Determination for general security access licences on the Regulated Hunter River and Glennies Creek.
“Water allocations will increase from the previously announced 94 per cent to 100 per cent of the share component for 2005/2006,” Mr Abbs said.
“Water allocations to access licences are made in accordance with the Water Sharing Plan for the Hunter Regulated River source that commenced on 1 July 2004.”
“The initial reduced allocations for general security users announced in July 2005 were required to ensure reliability of supply for towns and high security licence holders in future years, should the dry period continue.”
“However, significant rainfall across the Hunter Valley since the start of July has increased dam storage levels by over 20,000 million litres.”
“This welcome rainfall means it is now possible to increase the amount of water available for general security access licence on the Regulated Hunter River and Glennies Creek to 1 Megalitre (ML) per unit share, an increase of 0.06 ML per share for the 2005/2006 water year,” said Mr Abbs.
Information on the water sharing plans can be obtained by visiting the department’s website at www.dipnr.nsw.gov.au.
