Media Release - Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources Newcastle: 17 August 2005 PUBLIC ASKED TO COMMENT ON MACQUARIE GENERATION'S WATER LICENCE Public submissions are being sought by the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources (DIPNR) to assist with the review of water licences held by Macquarie Generation.
Hunter Regional Director for DIPNR, Craig Abbs, said the licences regulate how Macquarie Generation accesses water from the Hunter River, unregulated flows into Liddell and Plashett dams, as well as water from the Barnard River catchment.
“Under the licence agreement, a major review of Macquarie Generation’s activities must be undertaken within five years of issuing. The licence was granted on 11 December 2000,” said Mr Abbs.
“The review will assess the terms of the licence in relation to current legislative requirements and scientific knowledge, including the conversion of the licence from the old Water Act, under which it was issued, to the new Water Management Act.”
“Adherence to the requirements of the Water Sharing Plan for the Hunter Regulated River Water Source will also form part of the review to ensure ongoing licensed activities comply.”
“As part of the review process, the department will also conduct an operational investigation into the performance of Macquarie Generation in meeting licence conditions and identify any improvement, difficulties or anomalies.”
“The review will provide further opportunity to work with the community and to inform how Macquarie Generation’s licencing requirements address sustainability and water source health issues,” Mr Abbs said.
An information package, which includes a copy of Macquarie Generation’s water management licence, can be obtained by contacting the Hunter Regional office of DIPNR on 4929 9870.
The closing date for submissions is Friday 16 September 2005.
