Media Release - Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources Deniliquin: 1 September 2005 RECENT RAINFALL ENABLES POSITIVE ALLOCATION FOR NSW MURRAY VALLEY IRRIGATORS
Regional Director of the NSW Department of Natural Resources, David Harriss announced today that the NSW general security water users in the Murray Valley would have access to 14 percent of entitlement.
Mr Harriss said that rainfall in the last two weeks had provided good inflows into the Hume and Dartmouth Dams and flows from Victorian tributries that would pass into Lake Victoria had reduced the need to divert water from Lake Hume to the meet South Australian entitlement. Collectively, this has provided sufficient resources to make the first positive allocation announcement for this season.
The assessment has considered water availability up until the 30th of August and a conservative assessment of the additional volumes that would become available as a consequence of rain over the last two days. Mr Harriss said that inflows from this weeks rain will be confirmed over the next week and any improvements over and above todays assessment will be included in the September 15th allocation announcement.
Mr Harriss advised irrrigators that any inflows that improve water availability to New South Wales after general security allocation reaches 30% will be set aside for the Barmah-Millewa Environmental Water Allowance, before further contributing to general security water availability.
In the Lower Darling river downstream of the Menindee Lakes to Ashvale Station, general security water users could use up to 100 percent of entitlement in the 2005-06 year.
