Media Release - Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources Deniliquin: 7 September 2005 GENERAL SECURITY INCREASES TO 20 PERCENT FOR NSW MURRAY VALLEY IRRIGATORS Regional Director of the NSW Department of Natural Resources, David Harriss, announced today general security allocations for NSW Murray Valley irrigators will increase to 20 percent of entitlement.
This follows an assessment of the inflows to Hume and Dartmouth Dams that has occurred from last week’s rain.
Mr Harriss said that supplementary flows had been announced for irrigators downstream of the Barmah Choke only. The water in this supplementary event is the result of rain about a fortnight ago and recent flows from the Goulburn River. These flows will be confined to the Murray River downstream of the Barmah Choke and not all flow will be able to be regulated in Lake Victoria, which is nearing full capacity.
The recent high flows in the Kiewa and Ovens Rivers created a peak of approximately 30 000 Megalitres per day at Yarrawonga on 4 September. This flow will be very much mitigated in the forest system and by the time in arrives at Lake Victoria, early in October, it will used to supply South Australia entitlement flows with additional water stored in Lake Victoria. Accordingly it is not available as supplementary flow
A more comprehensive assessment will be undertaken and a formal announcement will be made on 15 September.
