Media Release - Minister's Office Sydney: 10 December 2004 INFRASTRUCTURE TO BE DELIVERED FOR SYDNEY'S NEW COMMUNITIES Minister for Infrastructure, Planning & Natural Resources Craig Knowles said today that newly released population projections supported the need for the NSW Government’s Land Release Plan for North West and South West Sydney, which will accommodate over a quarter of a million people over the next 30 years.
“We’ve refined population projections released in May this year down to statistical local areas – something which has not been done for around a decade.
“From this we know that some of the areas with the highest growth rate are in, or neighbour, the land release areas in the North and South West Sectors,” said Mr Knowles.
Some of the largest population increases over the period 2001 to 2031 will be in:
- Liverpool 148,000 - Baulkham Hills 103,000 - Camden – north 88,600 and - Blacktown – north 85,000
Other areas with large population increases will includes: Parramatta, Auburn and Campbelltown.
“This proof of the burgeoning growth in our city’s western precincts underlines the need for the commitment we made yesterday – to deliver infrastructure alongside the growth of new communities,” said Mr Knowles.
“Over the next five years alone the Government will ensure the deliver of major infrastructure projects including:
- Three new primary schools and a new high school across the two sectors. Eventually it is estimated that a total of 73 primary schools and 24 high schools will be required in the release areas - Work to start next year on an upgrade of Camden Valley Way - Work to start in 2009/2010 on upgrading Narellan Road and The Northern Road - Investment toward securing the land for a new rail line from Glenfield to Leppington.
“Over the next 30 years it is estimated that the total cost of infrastructure in the new release areas will be $7.8 billion, with the Government committed to meeting 25 per cent of those costs. The balance will be met by developer contributions paid into a Growth Centres Infrastructure Fund,” said Mr Knowles.
