Media Release - Minister's Office

Sydney: 4 February 2005

SYDNEY'S NEW NEIGHBOURHOODS A STEP CLOSER

Sydney’s newest neighbourhoods in the North- and South-West sectors are a step closer with the Government beginning advertising today for two key positions in the Growth Centres Commission (GCC).

NSW Minister for Infrastructure, Planning & Natural Resources, Craig Knowles, said today that the GCC would be responsible for planning the delivery of infrastructure in the land release areas, as well as scheduling land packages for release onto the market.

“The GCC is an integral part of the Government’s strong and detailed plans to develop these new communities as vibrant, functional neighbourhoods.

“Sydney’s population is growing by a thousand people a week and these land release areas will accommodate a significant number of the new homes we will need over the next thirty years.

“We need to ensure that the GCC has strong leadership and today we have commenced advertising for two of the key positions: the General Manager and the Infrastructure Development Coordinator.

“We’ll also be commencing recruitment for the Board of the GCC and its Chairperson.

“The key roles of the GCC will be:

- to develop land use and infrastructure plans for the areas

- to manage the planning, deliver and funding of infrastructure such as roads, utilities, schools and health services

- to recommend to Government the orderly sequencing of land release to co-ordinate the rollout infrastructure and to prevent speculation

- to achieve co-ordination between small land holders in the release areas.

“The GCC will be accountable to myself and to the Treasurer,” said Mr Knowles.

“Recruiting to these key positions is an important step forward in the establishment of these new neighbourhoods and we look forward to making the appointments over the next few weeks.”
