Media Release - Minister's Office

Sydney: 8 February 2005

GREEN FUTURE FOR SYDNEY'S NEW NEIGHBOURHOODS

NSW Minister for Infrastructure, Planning & Natural Resources, Craig Knowles, said today that new communities in the North-West and South-West of Sydney would be some of the most ‘water friendly’ in the country.

“In 30 years time, at least a quarter of a million people will be living in around 150,000 homes in the new release areas of North-West and South-West Sydney.

“Every single one of those homes will comply with the Government’s BASIX package – which means they will use at least 40 per cent less water.

“Every single one of those homes will also have access to recycled water for non-drinking purposes.

“Today we announced that the Government has appointed engineers to do technical studies for the Western Sydney Water Recycling Scheme.

“Through this scheme our newly appointed Growth Centres Commission will oversee the construction of a recycling scheme – along with the estimated $8 billion of other infrastructure like roads and schools.

“The experience of other recycling initiatives is that the use of drinking-quality water can be reduced by around 50 per cent if recycled water is used for purposes such as toilet flushing, garden watering and cleaning hard surfaces.

“Australia is a dry continent and we should build houses that minimise water use.

“By virtue of their water efficiency these new homes and communities will be far more responsive to Australian conditions.”
