Media Release - Minister's Office Sydney: 9 February 2005 BOARD APPOINTED TO PLAN FREIGHT INFRASTRUCTURE The Minister for Infrastructure, Planning & Natural Resources today announced the make up of the Freight Infrastructure Advisory Board (FIAB) which will advise the Government on infrastructure that will be needed to remove more freight off Sydney’s roads.
“I am pleased to announce that the following people have agreed to participate on the FIAB, which will operate under the Chairmanship of Mr Laurie Brereton:
Lisa Hunt from Transurban Greg Martin from Sydney Ports Corp Mal Peters from NSW Farmers Assn Neil Matthews who is a logistics expert Vince Graham from Rail Corp Tony Sheldon from the Transport Workers Union Llew Russel from Shipping Australia
“The Director-General of the Department of Infrastructure, Planning & Natural Resources, Jennifer Westacott, will also sit on the Board,” said Mr Knowles.
“The population of Sydney is growing by a thousand people a week.
“We have to ensure that that freight is moved around the city – and through the state – in the safest, most effective way.
“As part of our strong and detailed plans to improve our freight system, the Government wants to increase the proportion of freight containers going in and out of Port Botany to 40 per cent by 2011.
“The FIAB has been established to provide expert advice to the Government on: - the design of an intermodal terminal network to improve freight distribution - the infrastructure required to service the intermodal network - potential changes to work practices such as ‘truck tracking’ to minimise queuing at the port gate; ‘container in/container out’ to maximise the efficiency of truck haulage; and other strategies to minimise unnecessary movements of containers across the city.”
