Media Release - Minister's Office Sydney: 10 February 2005 PLANNING FOR SYDNEY'S FUTURE The Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources, Craig Knowles, today said that the NSW Government's strong and detailed plans for the future of Sydney would continue to be rolled out throughout the coming year.
"Sydney is growing at 1,000 people a week and the Government has already released detailed plans to manage the growth," said Mr Knowles.
"Throughout the coming year we will continue to roll out plans that will help to secure the future of our great city.
"We have very deliberately included money and detailed strategies for implementation - so that the plans will happen.
"This is in contrast to the Opposition who have no policies and even if they did couldn't be trusted to deliver.
"As I said on 16th September 2004: "the metropolitan strategy isn't about creating a single plan or shopping list - it's about putting in place a framework that will ensure that Sydney's development stays on the right track.
"The last thing that anyone wants is a document that sits on a shelf gathering dust and is ignored and forgotten within weeks.
"The metropolitan strategy will be a dynamic set of plans setting out a clear framework for the future of our city.
"So far the Government has released:
- A Metropolitan Water Plan: a detailed 25 year plan to secure Sydney's water;
- Nationally-acclaimed plans to develop new communities in Sydney's South West and North West;
- The creation of the Western Sydney Parklands - 27km long and an area 25 times the size of Centennial Park.
- $2 million to the Parramatta Road taskforce to plan for the revitalisation of the corridor;
- $2 million to Councils in centres across the region to help plan for a dynamic and vibrant future for their communities;
- Plans for the future of East Darling Harbour: creating a new park for the enjoyment of all Sydneysiders as well as some commercial and residential development.
"And there is more to come," said Mr Knowles.
