Media Release - Minister's Office Sydney: 17 February 2005 MASTER PLAN APPROVAL OPENS OPPORTUNITIES FOR SYDNEY FISH MARKET The State Government today announced the approval of a master plan for Sydney Fish Market at Pyrmont – opening the way for further improvements to the site.
“It is part of the State Government’s strong and detailed plans for our infrastructure,” the Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources, Mr Craig Knowles, said.
Each year two million customers and visitors go through the Sydney Fish Markets.
The plan includes possible promenades, boardwalks, improvements to vehicle and pedestrian access.
Sydney Fish Market Pty Ltd and Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority have prepared a master plan which could ultimately result in a vastly improved and expanded operation at the Pyrmont site.
The Master Plan gives in-principle approval for: - A huge increase in the space for fish retail outlets, restaurants and cafes, particularly along the waterfront; - A new office building on the corner of Pyrmont Bridge Road and Jones Street, including three levels of parking; - Open space and a new promenade along the foreshore - A new multi-deck car park, which – when combined with the new spaces in the office block and service vehicle spaces – would more than double the existing available spaces; - The relocation of the entry point on Bank Street and changes to the entry and exit from Pyrmont Bridge Road to improve access to the market; - Improvements inside the site to make vehicle, cycle and pedestrian movement easier; and - The redevelopment of the seafood wholesale and auction areas.
“Sydney Fish Market is part of the heart of Sydney. It is a landmark for local businesses and families as well as a major tourist attraction.
“The Master Plan could also pave the way for an improved link from Blackwattle Bay to Pyrmont through promenades and boardwalks, as well as more open space for nearby residents and visitors.
Member for Port Jackson, Sandra Nori, said the preservation of waterfront areas would greatly enhance what is a popular site for tourists and Sydneysiders.
Ms Nori, also NSW Minister for Tourism, said the Fish Market was a true Sydney harbour-side experience that attracted about two million visitors each year.
“The Master Plan could also pave the way for an improved link from Blackwattle Bay to Pyrmont through promenades and boardwalks, as well as more open space for nearby residents and visitors.
“Retaining the Fish Market’s commercial character would ensure visitors and residents remain part of the working history of one of the world’s premier fish markets,” said Ms Nori.
Mr Knowles said the Master Plan recognised the need for plans to govern growth and redevelopment on the site.
“The Master Plan is a guide to what is possible on the site, rather than approval to redevelop. All redevelopment at Sydney Fish Market will require approved Development Applications, which will be advertised and the community will be invited to make submissions,” Mr Knowles said.
