Media Release - Minister's Office Sydney: 1 March 2005 UPGRADES TO LEE WHARF DEVELOPMENT IN NEWCASTLE GET THE GREEN LIGHT NSW Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources today announced approval for $3.8 million worth of upgrades to the Lee Wharf development project which will create a new hub of activity by the harbour.
“Stage One of the Lee Street Wharf development will create a cosmopolitan hub including new public space, shops, offices, restaurants, serviced apartments and residential apartments,” said Mr Knowles.
“With the new upgrades included, this development will become a centre of activity in the city where people live, work and shop while taking in one of Newcastle’s best assets, its harbourside.”
Lee Wharf, located on both sides of Honeysuckle Drive will be a drawcard for tourists as well being home to 85 serviced apartments, bringing around 350 new residents into the city.
The upgrades include an additional two levels comprising of 13 apartments in one of the buildings, with amendments to its façade included, as well as two extra parking spaces in each of the three residential buildings.
“When all stages are complete, this $300 million development is expected to generate 449 direct jobs, 382 indirect jobs in a range of sectors,” said Mr Knowles.
The development applications were subject to thorough assessment by the Department’s Assessments Unit according to the relevant planning controls and the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act.
The approved development is in keeping with Newcastle Council’s development controls in terms of building height, floor space and view corridors to Newcastle Harbour.
Mr Knowles said that issues raised during the consultation process for the development had been addressed and that the project met the Government’s priorities for urban renewal offering long-term job and investment opportunities for the Newcastle community.
