Media Release - Minister's Office Sydney: 15 March 2005 FAST TRAIN PROPOSAL NSW Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources, Craig Knowles, said today that a private sector proposal for a fast train link between Parramatta and the city would be given careful consideration by Government.
“We’ve had an indication from the private sector that such a proposal is likely to be submitted to Government some time this year, and I’ll be looking forward to receiving it,” said Mr Knowles.
“It will have to be subjected to rigorous scrutiny to see how it stacks up both in terms of its viability, and in terms of the private sectors capacity to deliver such a project.
“We’ll also need to look at how it fits into other transport options for the future, and to the Government’s existing strong and detailed rail infrastructure plans, including the $1 billion Rail Clearways initiative.
“Sydney is growing by around a thousand people a week and it is important that we look at transport infrastructure that could help accommodate the needs of that growth.
“Transport infrastructure which encourages people off roads and onto public transport are always worthy of consideration.
“However, the Coalition’s failed experiment of the Central to Airport rail link provides a salient lesson in terms of ensuring that private sector transport enterprises are carefully considered from all angles,” said Mr Knowles.
