$60 MILLION FOR EARLY INFRASTRUCTURE IN SYDNEY'S NEW COMMUNITIES

The development of Sydney’s new communities in the north-west and south-west is a step closer with the NSW budget revealing around $60 million of infrastructure work to be commenced in the coming financial year.

NSW Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources, Craig Knowles, said the delivery of infrastructure along-side the growth of the new neighbourhoods was a key element of the Government’s plans for the land release areas.

“The land release program is a key element of the Metropolitan Strategy. We anticipate that these communities will accommodate around 30 per cent of the projected population growth in Sydney over the next thirty years.

“We said last year that these plans would build new and better ways to support the development of new communities, and this budget provides the funds to back that commitment in.

“We don’t want the future families of the north-west and south-west sectors to have to wait for their infrastructure.

“Over the next thirty years around $8 billion of infrastructure will be required. As the residents move in over the next three decades they will find their infrastructure growing along with their community.

“This is the first year of significant funding for the new release areas, and already there are substantial financial commitments.

“Around $60 million of work will get underway this financial year including:

- $26 million for the acquisition of land to be used as a future transport corridor into the south-west sector;

- $16.5 million for upgrading to Camden Valley Way, including $7.5 million through the newly formed Growth Centres Commission;

- $21 million for upgrades to Narellan Road through the Roads and Traffic Authority;

- $400,000 for land conservation work.

“This funding will be a mix of budget allocations, developer contributions and borrowings through the Growth Centres Commission and adds to a host of other major infrastructure projects being undertaken through Government agencies that will benefit the future communities of the north-west and south-west sectors,” said Mr Knowles.

“The plans we released last year for the north-west and south-west sectors are recognised as being among the best in the world.

“The commitment made in this year’s budget is the next big step forward in turning those plans into reality.

“Around a quarter of a million people will eventually reside in these new neighbourhoods but even in advance of a single house being built, we are delivering some of the infrastructure which will be essential in just a few years time.”
