Media Release - Ministers Office Sydney: 24 May 2005 MORE PARKLANDS FOR WESTERN SYDNEY The NSW Government will secure 135 hectares of land at Old Wallgrove Road in Ropes Creek, the majority of which will be reserved for the enjoyment of future generations in western Sydney.
NSW Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources, Craig Knowles, said the land had been identified since the 1960s as being important, primarily for future recreational uses, and for its environmental assets.
“As this region’s community grows, it is important that the Government secures land that will be able to be enjoyed as open space.
“A key theme of the Government’s Metropolitan Strategy has been to deliver infrastructure alongside the growth of a community.
“Acquiring this land will set aside a significant parcel of land as the future recreational ‘infrastructure’ of the surrounding suburbs. That kind of planning for the future just makes good sense.”
“It will join the 2,100 hectares of existing regional parkland along Ropes Creek and South Creek and the massive Western Sydney Parklands – which is around 5,500 hectares – as one of the key greenspaces to be available to the thousands more families that will live and work in Sydney’s west in the coming decades.
The site is at the bottom of a seven kilometre open space corridor running south from the ADI site.
“At around half the size of Centennial Park, much of the land will eventually offer great recreational opportunities.
“The vegetation around the creek is good quality, and the surrounding area has largely been used for low impact agricultural purposes so the land will considerably add to the green ‘lungs’ that a growing city needs.”
Mr Knowles said the acquisition process had commenced and comprehensive planning was also underway to determine the final uses for all parts of the site.
