CARR GOVERNMENT PLAN TO SECURE THE HEALTH OF THE HAWKESBURY-NEPEAN RIVER

The Government will announce a plan today to improve the health of the Hawkesbury-Nepean River during the worst drought in the nation’s history.

Craig Knowles, Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources says the plan will see local councils working with the Carr Government to maximise control of weed growth and algal blooms in the lead up to summer, improving water quality for recreational, commercial and agricultural users.

The plan includes:

- New booms to contain weed growth at key points along the River;

- Up to $200,000 in funding from the Carr Government to undertake weed control measures such as harvesting.

- The implementation of water monitoring to measure the effects of environmental flows;

- The initiation of a partnership between the local council, the Catchment Management Authority and the Carr Government to develop an action plan for the future.
