Media Release - Ministers Office Sydney: 29 June 2005 NEW APPOINTMENTS TO BUILD ON THE SUCCESS OF THE GOVERNMENT'S METROPOLITAN STRATEGY The Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources, Craig Knowles, today announced three appointments which will be instrumental in delivering the Government’s Metropolitan Strategy.
“It is with great pleasure that I announce the following appointments:
- Professor Chris Johnson, the NSW Government Architect has been appointed to the newly created position of Executive Director of Urban Renewal;
- Gail Connolly, Director of Planning and Environment at Campbelltown City Council, has been appointed to the role of Executive Director, Metropolitan Strategy, incorporating the Metropolitan Development Programme and;
- Dr Kerry Schott, the Executive Director of Private Projects and Asset Management in the NSW Treasury has been appointed on a temporary basis to develop a business plan for the newly created Growth Centres Commission.
“These are all candidates whose skill sets and professional experience make them leaders in their fields.
“Within weeks they will join a team of highly regarded professionals that the Director-General, Jennifer Westacott has assembled in just 18 months, since the creation of the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources.
“These new appointments are all key positions in delivering vital aspects of the Government’s Metropolitan Strategy, which will guide Sydney’s growth over the next three decades.
“Chris Johnson has been the Government Architect for a decade. He made a substantial contribution to the architecture of the Olympics and has been instrumental in developing town centre plans for Newcastle, Gosford, Chatswood, Parramatta, Penrith, Windsor, Green Square and Hurstville.
“Chris holds a number of professorial posts at various universities and has published several books on the future of our homes, and our city.
“We have already released award-winning plans for the new release areas in the North-West and South-West of Sydney. How the already existing areas of Sydney grow over the next 30 years while retaining the unique and much loved qualities of our suburbs is the next challenge.
“Chris’ enormous experience in delivering communities which are functional, attractive and which offer the choice and quality we expect will be vital in responding to that challenge.
“Gail is a highly respected planner with a distinguished career in local government.
“In her new role, Gail will be responsible for the Metropolitan Development Programme and will work closely with local councils as we further develop, and deliver, the Government’s Metropolitan Strategy.
“Strong leadership of the Government’s Metropolitan Strategy, as we move from the planning stages into delivery of its various components, is vital. Gail’s knowledge of Sydney and the challenges it faces, her experience in leadership positions and her background in planning will be an asset in this position.
“Dr Kerry Schott is one of the most respected Treasury officials in this country. Kerry’s temporary appointment will be for the explicit purpose of establishing the business plan for the Growth Centres Commission. Her work will run alongside the process of appointing permanent staff to the GCC.
“The GCC will be responsible for the overall coordination of the release of land in the North-West and South-West of Sydney, and for the delivery of the well-designed, well-planned communities in those areas.
“I’m extremely impressed by the calibre of these appointees who all bring unique and valuable characteristics to their roles,” said Mr Knowles.
